    In reality, Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a repackaging of several marketing and site development best practices that have the additional bonus of helping your website appear higher on search engine results. That’s because Google and the other search engines are basically rewarding you for doing what you should be doing anyway to promote your company: creating relevant content, making your site easy to use and fast to load and so on are all for the benefit of the users of your website, not Google.     So, SEO itself really doesn’t have a role in online marketing; however, things like your website, the content that you place on it, and the rest of the bells and whistles you create to speak to your target audience do have a role in online marketing. Additionally, search engines themselves do have a role in online marketing as a channel that can bring your target audience to your website, and that channel has both a paid and organic side to its existence, and that organic side is influenced by how well you do your job in other parts of online marketing.

    SEOs have done a fantastic job over the years making what they do appear to be a marketing effort, but in reality, we’re really cleaning up the messes of lazy website owners who don’t design their websites properly the first time.
