The biggest difference between them is that link building works for long period of time, whereas link baiting works on for short period of time to attract traffic on your blog or site.

Linkbaiting is the practice of crafting content that is designed to get other content producers to link to it. The purpose is increasing the number of inbound links to your content and thus improving its performance in search engine results.

Link building is the process of placing your webpage URL with the help of an anchor text to various external webpages to build trust.

    Hi,
Look at it this way. All squares are rectangles but not all rectangles are squares. Link baiting is one tactic within the larger concept of "link building."

IMHO, "link baiting" is creating a piece of content (story, infographic, etc.) so juicy or interesting that it's just begging to get linked-to. One example would be to use some hyperbolic headline like "SEO is dead" to get readers all worked up and create discussion and sharing...which almost inevitably leads to links back to the site or story from other blogs or twitter feeds. In this case the story/headline was the "bait."

    Hi Friends,

Link building is mainly three types One-way, Two-way & Three way. In all three link building technique you just take link from any website (of course relevant to your theme) with your chosen anchor text. It will give you high rank in SERPS for that particular anchor text.

Link Baiting is just called taking link in any form from anywhere e.g signature, forum commenting, blog posting. Here anchor text is not necessary simply you used your site's URL for taking link. You can put your URL in your signature, your comments it will catch people's attention and it become an another form of viral marketing.

The only definitive difference between link baiting and link building is that link baiting is one technique used by SEO consultants within the concept of link building. Savvy webmasters use “baits” in link baiting such as hot headlines to create discussions on social media or online forums in order to generate links back to their websites.
