How to become a domain registrar?

Is it true that it is a timestaking and effort driven process to be one? Please let me know if you have any sources? Like someone I can consult?

Review the Qualification Criteria described in the Statement of Registrar Accreditation Policy. Review the Financial Considerations that apply to become an ICANN -accredited registrar. Review the Governing Agreements and Policies that apply to every ICANN -accredited registrar. Apply for Registrar Accreditation.

The markup is often quite small on domain name sales, which is why retail registrars like GoDaddy tend to push value-added services. That's where their major profits come from. The registrant is the owner of the domain name. They pay the registrar, who in turn pays the registry.
