As far as I know you only need one site map per website. Google Webmaster only asks for one. How would multiple site maps even work since it's a file with an expected name "sitemap.xml" located in the index directory of your site.

Multiple sitemaps should only be used when your site requirements exceed the size limitations provided for a single sitemap file. For simple additions and updates in the website, you need not create an additional sitemap as search engines are able to pick up these updates when crawling your site.

The main reason why you should consider adding more than one sitemaps is not only to minimize crowding of links, but also to ensure that all pages are crawled and indexed by the search engines. Multiple sitemaps are very efficient in classifying and categorizing the content in a website.

Sitemaps are not required for search engines to effectively crawl your website. However, they can come in handy, in particular cases. Since they are listed in the Search Console, it is certain that Google offers them some attention.

Include all pages. The purpose of the XML sitemap is to tell the search engines about all of your content. ... Sitemaps are an easy way for webmasters to inform search engines about pages on their sites that are available for crawling. If you have a lot of content you can use multiple XML sitemaps.
