SEO is sometimes used as an umbrella term that includes SEM, but because SEM refers strictly to paid advertising, they are actually separate. SEM is about getting traffic via paid ads, and SEO is more about acquiring, monitoring and analyzing organic (unpaid) traffic patterns.

The main difference between SEM vs. SEO is that SEM is a paid strategy and SEO is an organic strategy. Like most things in the search industry, the definitions related to search marketing have evolved . Some marketers may consider SEM to be an umbrella term that includes both paid and organic strategies.

SEM quickly capitalizes on targeted keyword searches; SEO provides the foundation to convert and retain the traffic generated by SEM strategies. Carefully intertwining both SEO and SEM techniques will produce a stronger digital marketing campaign with stronger performance and noticeable results.

Simplest answer, SEO is free and responsible for organic traffic/ranking. Where as SEM refers to paid campaign. Appears in the top google paid ad column.

The goals of both are same to draw more traffic to the website. But completely follows different strategies to reach optimum level.

The relation ships are link to website growth. The two variable does’t depends upon each other and operate on parallel direction. Only content has linkage with both as its most important element in both cases.

    Hi,
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization and SEM stands for Search Engine Marketing. The biggest difference between the two is that SEO is free and SEM is paid. SEM includes pay-per-click advertising and display ads that are purchased. Despite the major difference between the two, they work best in unison.
