Referral traffic is Google's method of reporting visits that came to your site from sources outside of its search engine. When someone clicks on a hyperlink to go to a new page on a different website, Analytics tracks the click as a referral visit to the second site.

The takeaway. People don't refer someone for a bonus. As Google found out, people refer other people because they both believe in them and they believe in the company they work for. Increasing referral bonuses will do little to increase the number of referrals your company will receive.

Google referral traffic is any other way that visitors can use Google to find your website, without going through the search engine, Google+, or YouTube. As it turns out, that wasn't so hard to define after all.

Not all referrals from Google.com domains come through organic search or Google Ads ad listings. Referrals may come from a variety of sources, including Google Groups posts, or static pages on related Google sites. Such sessions are tagged as [referral] instead of [organic] or [cpc].

A referral is meant to come from someone who knows you and can actually recommend your technical skills. If you know a person at Google like that, you ask them. If you don't, you're not often just going to find someone to give you a referral without knowing you.

Referrals in Google Analytics show you sites that “referred” visitors to your site by clicking a link. This category excludes advertising visits, as well as organic search, in most cases. To view Referrals, go to Acquisition > All Traffic > Referrals.
