A sudden increase in link velocity could be an indicator of spamming or it could be due to viral marketing.

The most important thing with links is to be consistent. Don't get 200 links in a day and then not get any other links for a month. Google's spider hates that kind of thing and will dock you for it. However, if you can consistently get 200 links a day to your website and all of them are fairly high quality or at least surrounding with high-quality content, go for it.
