It’s about providing good user experience.

Page speed is important to users because, the faster pages indicate that the site is more efficient. Page speed of 0.08 to less than 2.5 seconds will be good. Faster pages means users /visitors will stay on the page instead of leaving it. If a page takes longer than 3 seconds to load, over a quarter of users will click away.

Page speed is a direct ranking factor since Google's Algorithm Speed Update. ... Studies by Google show that average 3G loading speed is very slow. The study confirms that users leave the site after about 3 seconds. Pages with a longer load time tend to have higher bounce rates will affect the ranking. You'll lose out on sales and traffic if your site loads slowly.

Page speed is important to users because, well, faster pages are more efficient and provide a much better on-page user experience. Per a recent Kissmetrics infographic, if a page takes longer than 3 seconds to load, over a quarter of users will click away. Page speed also affects conversion rate.

Core Web Vitals assess a website's loading, interactivity and visual stability of content, with the overall score influencing your ranking. This is why page load speed is a confirmed ranking factor, both on desktop and mobile sites
