A country code top-level domain (ccTLD) is an Internet top-level domain generally used or reserved for a country, sovereign state, or dependent territory identified with a country code. All ASCII ccTLD identifiers are two letters long, and all two-letter top-level domains are ccTLDs.

Important in international SEO, ccTLDs are the single strongest way to show search engines and users that site content is specifically targeted to a certain country or region — but, importantly, NOT specifically a certain language.

ccTLD stands for "country code top level domain". That is, the domains that are used by countries and ending with the respective country code. gTLD (genereic top-level domain) on the other hand is a domain type that is not country-specific but paired with different classes of organizations.

Top-level domain (TLD) refers to the last segment of a domain name, or the part that follows immediately after the "dot" symbol. For example, in the internet address: https://www.google.com, the “.com” portion is the TLD.

Examples of some of the popular TLDs include:
    .com.
    org.
    net.
    gov.
    biz.
    edu.

A ccTLD is a country code top-level domain extension that is assigned to a country in the world. Each country has their own domain extension based on the ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 country codes. This means that all ccTLDs are only two characters, and all two character TLDs are ccTLDs. The first ccTLDs delegated were .US for the United States, .UK for the United Kingdom, and .IT for Italy in 1985.
