Page speed, as shown in Pagespeed Insights, is a combination of factors that reports on the performance of a page on both mobile and desktop devices suggesting how you would improve your overall performance while using pulled in data from lighthouse (another tool of Google’s) but does not actually give the exact metric as to what is actually used by Google to measure the speed of the page loading. Page speed is also generally referred to as the speed of the loading of the content of the page.

Google is making the improvement of performance or “page speed” as part of its mandate as it knows that there is an inverse relationship between bounce rates being higher with page load speed being lower. So, the slower the page is to load, the higher the bounce rate is which people hitting the back button as they arrive on a page.

Google has since begun series explaining Core Web Vitals and their addition as a ranking signal(s) in 2021 so that websites can improve their performance. All of these developments point towards the future where Google will be stricter with page load speed. That is why it is important for SEO.

Page speed is important to users because, well, faster pages are more efficient and provide a much better on-page user experience. Per a recent Kissmetrics infographic, if a page takes longer than 3 seconds to load, over a quarter of users will click away.

If you want a quick answer, the Google recommended page load time is under two seconds: “Two seconds is the threshold for ecommerce website acceptability. At Google, we aim for under a half-second.” Fast matters, especially when it comes to customer service.
