A virus and a trojan are both malware that damages your system in some way, but there are critical differences between the two. Many people use the two terms interchangeably, and that’s wrong.
A computer virus is attached to an executable file, and it spreads infection from one computer to another. The virus can only cause damage when you run or open the infected file. Viruses range in severity. Some cause mild damage while others can severely impact your hardware, software, or files. A virus only spreads because of human action, such as running an infected file. Also, a virus cannot be controlled remotely.
A trojan horse is very different from a virus. Trojans are not attached to executable files. Instead, these destructive files pose as genuine applications. Trojans also do not replicate themselves as viruses do. The main objective of trojans is to steal information and open a backdoor into your system that future attackers can exploit. Trojan horses can be controlled by a remote.
A strong antivirus can protect you from all kinds of viruses and trojans. Now that you know the difference between viruses and trojans, you can protect your system better.
