Post How Can I Migrate From Shared Hosting to VPS Server?

Most businesses and organizations start their first website by using shared hosting plans. They don’t have an idea about their website traffic and resource utilization. So, they start with a basic plan and upgrade their plan from shared hosting to VPS hosting or managed cloud and dedicated servers as they get more traffic. Generally, shared hosting is upgraded to the VPS server because of required computing power, space and bandwidth.

    What is Shared Hosting?

As the name indicates, it is a most general type of web hosting in which a server is shared with several other websites, and no one has more control or root access to this particular server. The server resources are divided, and control panel accounts are provided to the clients instead of a personal server. The hosting provider, such as Temok, manages the resources, Operating systems, and applications. Their expert technical staff allocate and manage resources across all accounts on the server. Apart from a shared hosting server, all accounts are private, but nasty neighbors can affect them.

What is a Quick Overview of VPS Hosting?

Virtual Private Server (VPS) is the most popular web hosting used by mid-level businesses or websites with many visitors, root access and other special requirements. With the use of virtualization technology, you will be able to get isolated dedicated resources. It is more secure than shared hosting because you will get a dedicated space on a dedicated server instead of just an account.

Simple steps on how to migrate from shared hosting to VPS
Step 1 – Transfer your domain to your new host (they must have a domain service)
This is optional but advised. Save yourself time and resources by transferring your domain to your new hosting provider or a domain registrar. This makes life a lot easier when migrating from one host to another. This way you will make sure that your domain name remains operational and safe during migration.

Step 2 – Create a Backup of Your Website
You should already be backing up your website. It is even more relevant now. Therefore, before you make any irreversible changes ensure that you back up your website. Export your website’s database and download your files. Not only will this help in the transfer of databases and files later but it will be there as a safety net should something go wrong. Go to your cPanel and back up your files before moving on.

Step 3: Upload your files and import your database to your new VPS
Set up your new VPS account and then upload all the files and databases you downloaded earlier. Now that you have moved your data to your VPS account, you are ready for step 4.

Step 4: Point your IP address to your new server
You are almost there! You can now go to your DNS provider point your address to your new server. Normally you email this request to your domain name registrar.

And just like that you have moved out of an apartment into your very own house with a backyard. Congratulations on successful migrating your shared plan to VPS. Enjoy the new perks as your business continues to expand

Shared Hosting and VPS is almost the same thing. But VPS is more secure than shared server. It has more bandwidth, more storage, more processor speed.

You can use PHP, Perl and other scripts that require high processor usage on VPS. If you are looking for an alternative from shared hosting, VPS server is the best way.

Here are the steps to migrate from Shared hosting to VPS hosting

Step 1. Transfer your website to the VPS (domain service)

It can be more convenient to transfer your domain when transferring your hosting. If you do so, you'll make sure that your domain is operational during migration and safe from the risk of being shut down then and there.

Step 2. Create a backup of your website

Before changing anything, be sure to back up your website. Export the data from your site and download any files that could be lost. With these backups, your website will always be recoverable, no matter what happens. Export your cPanel files, too, so you can make a complete recovery anytime.

Step 3. Upload your files and import your database to your new VPS.

You can now upload all the files and databases you downloaded earlier onto your new VPS account. The next step is to set up your file server.

Step 4. Point your IP address to your new server

Now that your new server is set up, you just need to point the domain name to the new IP address. You can do that by emailing your request to your domain registrar.
