Explaining SEO to non-SEO people can sometimes be very challenging. You might have tried to explain it by saying “SEO helps you to appear in Google,” but I’ve come to learn that it needs to be a little more than that. I don’t think there’s necessarily a “wrong” way to explain SEO to a client; I like to think that there’s a good way, and then there’s a better way.

I would describe it as advertising. You need to have your company or website listed in correct terms so people that need the product or service find it.
Like the old days when you bought ad in phone book you try to get listed first for the thing you want people to find your company for. Now you have to seo site and links back to your site so it ranks high on first page of search results.
