Backlinks are incoming links to a website or web page. Inbound links were originally important as a primary means of web navigation; today their significance lies in search engine optimization (SEO). The number of backlinks is one indication of the popularity or importance of that website or page (though other measures, such as PageRank, are also considered to be important). Outside of SEO, the backlinks of a webpage may be of significant personal, cultural or semantic interest: they indicate who is paying attention to that page. Inbound links send visitors to your web site. Generally, this is seen as a good thing. Many sites go to great lengths to achieve as much of this "free" advertising as possible, although a few sites are very particular about where the links are pointing.

Creating inbound links to your website is one of the best ways for you to increase your all important traffic, sales and search engine rankings. Recently the major search engines have begun placing more and more importance on the number and types of inbound links that a website receives, when determining how well they rate a website.

Incoming links mean inbound links to your site from other domains(sites). Increase in the number of links to your site will result in your PR and keyword.

Inbound or incoming links are nowadays playing some big roles in shaping the web rankings of the websites on all major search engines portals and without them no traffic or positions would be gained. It is the best policy trying to gain one way links from relevant sources rather than getting involved with tens or hundreds of links exchanges or three way linking patterns that may not generate anything useful in the long term. The top ranking websites are found to be powered by a lot of inbound links.

In basic link terminology, a backlink is any link received by a web node (web page, directory, website, or top level domain) from another web node [1]. Backlinks are also known as incoming links, inbound links, inlinks, and inward links.
