Building backlinks, well, doing SEO in general, needs constant work. The backlinks can vanish because of multiple reasons, like the domains are no longer active, the admins/mods deleted your comments or disabled the signature option and so on.

You should also keep in mind that the backlink checker tools are not 100% accurate. You can find out the real and actual number of your backlinks only by checking manually each and every backlink you have built on each and every domain. But since that's kind of unrealistic, you just have to trust such a tool, or at least check your backlinks using more tools and compare the results.
