A virus normally requires an action to infect a victim. For instance, the malicious programs inside e-mail attachments usually only strike if you open them. The effect of a virus can be anything from a simple prank that pops up messages to the complete destruction of programs and data.

Some viruses attack the computer’s boot sector, the area on the hard drive that hosts the code for the start-up routine. Such a root code virus causes havoc because it runs itself every time you switch on the computer. Other viruses are hidden in emails, games or attached documents. These applications will appear to run normally but in the background; the malign code plays tricks like sending infected emails to everyone in your contacts list.

Another kind of malicious agent is the worm. This is able to replicate itself, often programming the infected machine to send copies to myriad random computers. Successful worms spread almost exponentially through networks, consuming processing power and bandwidth as they go.

It vastly depends on the virus. The main logic of a virus is a software which is used to steal data (a keylogger for example), destruct data, steal resources (such as use your graphics card to do bitcoin mining) and such. But in it's essence, a definition of a virus could be: A malicious software that replicates itself by tempering other programs' code and inserting its own code.

    hello friend,
a computer virus is a type of malicious code or program written to alter the way a computer operates and is designed to spread from one computer to another. A virus operates by inserting or attaching itself to a legitimate program or document that supports macros in order to execute its code.

There are several ways a computer can get infected by a virus and most of them involve downloading – either intentionally or unintentionally – infected files. ... Even connecting to an infected external drive (like a USB) can introduce malicious software into your system.

Viruses may have gone the way of dinosaurs, but attacks on computer systems are still very much in existence. ... Cyber threats however, are still very much a part of the modern picture and are often referred to simply as “viruses” because the word has become a catch-all for any type of security issue.
