managed colo is much more expensive than unmanaged colo. It's especially right when you colo 1 server only. I even know some managed colo vendors dont want to work with small customers.

Colocation? Only if you are a big firm, you want to own all your servers, want only your team to touch it. For everyone else, simple dedicated hosting will do.

If you know server hardware well, buy it cheap and colo it. It will save you money.
If you are not a hardware person, get a dedicated server from a host that guarantees quick hardware replacement. You don't have the trouble of dealing failed hardware (RMA, packing, shipping, ..etc)

The advantages and disadvantaged depend on your own unique requirements and budget.

Colocation gives you complete control over your hardware. This is great if you have specific requirements that aren't met by most dedicated server providers. With colocation you also own your hardware, which can provide significant cost savings over time.

With a dedicated server you're renting the hardware, so it's not your responsibility to fix if if there is a hardware failure. For long term deployments this might be more expensive than colocation, but if you only need a server for a few months then it's likely to be more cost effective. Not having to worry about the server's hardware is a big advantage for a dedicated server, and for many people gives it an unbeatable advantage over colocation.

It's common for people to start with a dedicated server, and then consider moving to colocation as they become more comfortable with managing their servers. Also, keep in mind that everyone has there own preferences and requirements, so there is no "always right" solution that works for everybody.

It depends upon your requirements. If you want to use server for a longer duration and if you are willing to invest a good amount initially than you can purchase a server and co-locate it. If you need a server for a short duration or don't want to invest huge amount in server purchase initially than you can opt for a Dedicated server.

Colocation means you won your servers, so in a longer run you will be beneficial in the financial part. Also the upgrade of server and confguration of server all you can work according to your requirement.

Colocation will be helpful only if you are looking for a longer run and better identity where you can control all you have.

To re-iterate what everyone else is saying, how much money are you able to invest and how proficient are you with the technology?

If you have the money, and are proficient with the technological aspects of maintaining your own server, then co-location might be right for you. You are able to save some money over time and only you will have access to your server.

However, even if you have the money, but not quite certain about all the aspects of server maintenance, then dedicated hosting is right up your alley. It will cost more over time and you will still own all your data but the company owns the server... Whatever information you have on that server will be wiped, so be warned.

A colocation is a facility where the servers and other computing equipment belonging to different companies share space.

Dedicated Servers are seen as the best type of web hosting for people who are running large resource intensive websites that receive many visitors

Dedicated and Colocation both Web Hosting are more expensive than other web hosts and each offer various features that greatly benefit enterprise of all sizes.

With dedicated web hosting, you will lease a private dedicated server that is dedicated just to you, in which you can host your websites. Basically, you lease a service that allows you to lease a powerful web server. If you need to maintain a tight budget, a dedicated hosting plan is a good choice, especially if you do not own a private server. With dedicated web hosting, you will be provided with all of the feature, functions, and resources such as bandwidth, memory, and disk space to effectively host your sites. You can use both the Linux and Windows operating system with a dedicated web host plan. You can download the Linux operating system for free as it is open source software.

Colocation web host will provide you with the ability to store your web server in a secure data center that is equipped with all of the state-of-the-art security features, and the facility is monitored by surveillance 24 hours a day. If you currently own a web server, then it may be better to pay for a colocation web hosting plan. Most of the colocation web hosting plans has less technical support unless you get a complete all-inclusive host plan. When you buy a dedicated hosting plan, you have the ability to upgrade any time to a more powerful web server. With colocation hosting, you only have the ability to utilize the web server that you own.

If you have a big firm than you should go for colocation. Colocation means to place your own server into a Data center and rent network and power from them. You can choose the space, power and bandwidth you need and let us take over from there. Collocation hosting helps minimize downtimes and increase availability. he hosting company that stores your server monitors and troubleshoots it for you. With colocation hosting, you can be assured of high security for your server as the hosting company’s datacenters are well equipped for it. With the colocation model of management, you can reduce set up and maintenance costs significantly. Since you don’t need to maintain a datacenter of your own, you save costs.

Attractive servers are available form asvhost.com and qhoster.com.
Excellent customer service, literally minutes to reply. From a month of experience, the servers have never had connection issues. Sometimes speed seemed to get stuck for 1-2 secs, could be my side though.
