Windows and Linux are totally different systems. The VPS essential are different. While Windows can be a highly commercial OS, Linux is normally a free and free OS. This difference in pricing is reflected in the prices on the Windows VPS and Linux VPS Hosting.

Choosing the Server Operating system depends upon the applications used to built your website. If you have a website built in asp, asp.net or MS-SQL or you are willing to use any Microsoft application like ColdFusion or any other, you will have to opt for a Windows VPS. If you have a website built in PHP or HTML, than you can opt for a Linux VPS. Windows server is a bit costly then Linux, because Windows is a licensed OS and the some of the applications supported on Windows like MS-SQL Standard or Enterprise edition needs licensing too whereas Linux is open source, so its OS, database and various other applications are free to use.

The key difference of them is that they have different OS. I think you should choose one you are familiar with.

Linux is more secure than windows that's why people choosing dedicated server hosting prefer to choose Linux as an OS.

Comparing the prices of Windows and Linux, Windows is expensive as it requires a Operating system license unlike Linux which is an open source. The selection between the two will depend completely on the requirements, scripts and the databases that you will need to run your website. Script like PHP is supported on both but in case you need ASP, ASP.NET or MSSQL database then you need to opt for a Windows platform.

The Windows VPS hosting option is more expensive but it is likely to be one that the user is more comfortable with. The Linux VPS option is one that is likely to be one for people who have less budget to spend or are happy with using open source products.

As I know If you use the popular web design program, Microsoft Front Page, having a Windows Hosting platform will make your life a lot easier. You won’t have to worry about making sure your server supports extensions, as you would with a Linux hosting platform.

Linux and Windows are two different types of operating systems. Linux is the most popular operating system for web servers. Since Linux-based hosting is more popular, it has more of the features web designers expect. So unless you have websites which need specific Windows applications, Linux is the preferred choice.
