Unix Hosting and Windows Hosting are the two main operating system. Unix is stable and cab able to run for many years without rebooting. It is cost free compared to Windows. On the other hand, Windows is also reliable but slightly less than Unix. Windows hosting results in being a more expensive platform.

Both Unix and Windows can handle high traffic websites and add-ons such as chat rooms, email and website statistics with ease. The biggest differences are price and software compatibility. Because Windows must be purchased and licenses renewed continuously, Windows hosting plans are usually more expensive than Unix-based plans. Also Unix-based plans often come with free email, databases (MySQL), statistic, and community programs. While Windows plans come with Microsoft software (MS SQL, for example) that must be purchased by the hosting company.

Both platforms have their own unique features, advantages and disadvantages.

If you are going to add dynamic content on your site using PHP or CGI scripts and want to interface with a mySQL database, then you should choose UNIX for better compatibility with these applications. However, if you are going to use ASP/Access scripting combination, Cold Fusion, VB scripts or a MS SQL Server database, then choose Windows.

UNIX-based hosting is generally seen as being more stable, it also performs faster and can be more secure since most malicious software is written to cause damage to Windows. However, you will need Windows hosting if you are going to develop in .NET or Visual Basic

What Is The Difference Between Unix Hosting And Windows Hosting

I would like to add one important point: UNIX/Linux hosting plans often come with SSH (command line) access, and this is standard on VPS and "higher" plans. Command line access can be a big advantage if you (a webmaster) use dial-up Internet connection (for example, when travelling). But MySQL is supported on Windows platform as well.

They both have their pros and cons. Choosing Unix or Windows host depends upon customer requirements, basically the difference is of ASP .net. windows gives you asp hostting unlike linux.

As per my knowledge when you create a dynamic website using PHP or CGI scripting language then you can choose UNIX operating system but when you create a dynamic website using ASP or ASP.net scripting language then you can choose windows operating system.

The main differences has been described by the other members already, i will mention only one point here that Linux Web Hosting is much better than Windows because it supports almost every script either it is PHP or any other other but windows hosting supports only few scripts.

The majority of web sites hosted on the internet are hosted on Unix servers yet Windows hosting serves the needs of a rapidly growing group of powerful and complex web hosting sites and applications. There is a common misconception that web masters using a Windows PC must use a Windows based hosting plan. This could not be further from the truth! For most web sites a solid Unix plan such as the MySiteSpace Pro plan is all the web hosting you will ever need, but if you are planning to use something like Active Server Pages, .NET or plug into a Microsoft Access or SQL database, you're going to want to solid Windows hosting plan.

There are two platforms which your web site may be hosted on. The platform that you choose does not depend on what operating system you are using to create the web site. Instead, it depends on what advanced technology your web site uses. If your web site is static and composed of HTML and graphics, then most likely, your web site may be hosted on a Unix server.
    Unix
Lower hosting costs than Windows, most of the time
Supports PHP scripting, MySQL database, Frontpage extensions, Real Audio/Video streams
    Linux based platform
    Windows
Supports ColdFusion, IIS, VBSCript, Windows Media, ASP scripting, MSSQL database, .NET framework
    Windows based platform
Few web hosting PHP option but most don't
