    The greatest importance to e-commerce site builders, is the SSL certificate. The SSL certificate sits on a secure server and is used to encrypt the data and to identify the Web site. The SSL certificate helps to prove the site belongs to who it says it belongs to and contains information about the certificate holder, the domain that the certificate was issued to, the name of the Certificate Authority who issued the certificate, the root and the country it was issued in.

    SSL certificate basically provides a security for users as it protects their data. It is usually needed for ecommerce sites as they have lot of private information of customers which needs to be protected.

    The SSL makes the site secure thereby assuring users that their data will be safe and they can transact safely via this website.

    When customer goes for online shopping, they always check for website legitimacy. They can find it by checking the URL of that particular website. If it is safe with SSL, the site is secure for online shopping. Sometimes a padlock is shown in the status bar on browser that is also sign of secured website. Website URL will display like HTTPS instead of HTTP. SSL certificate secures the website from hackers using strong encryption so customer can freely submit personal information like credit card number or etc..

    SSL is all about encryption. SSL encrypts data, like credit cards numbers (as well other personally identifiable information), which prevents the "bad guys" from stealing your information for malicious intent

    The primary reason why SSL is used is to keep sensitive information sent across the Internet encrypted so that only the intended recipient can understand it. This is important because the information you send on the Internet is passed from computer to computer to get to the destination server. Any computer in between you and the server can see your credit card numbers, usernames and passwords, and other sensitive information if it is not encrypted with an SSL certificate. When an SSL certificate is used, the information becomes unreadable to everyone except for the server you are sending the information to. This protects it from hackers and identity thieves.

    SSL is used:

    To secure online credit card transactions;
    To secure system logins and any sensitive information exchanged online;
    To secure webmail and applications like Outlook Web Access, Exchange and Office Communications Server;
    To secure workflow and virtualization applications like Citrix Delivery Platforms or cloud-based computing platforms;
    To secure the connection between an email client such as Microsoft Outlook and an email server such as Microsoft Exchange;
    To secure the transfer of files over https and FTP(s) services, such as website owners updating new pages to their websites or transferring large files;
    To secure hosting control panel logins and activity like Parallels, cPanel, and others;
    To secure intranet based traffic such as internal networks, file sharing, extranets, and database connections;

    Extended Validation (EV) SSL Certificate are the first choice for eCommerce websites. This provides a high level of safety & security to the eCommerce website. It also provides a green address bar with a proper business name & is validated through a very thorough verification process.

    SSL certificates and connections make it easy for eCommerce sites to protect sensitive data. If your website is not currently using encrypted connections, you are putting your customers at risk. SSL certificates are inexpensive and pay for themselves many times over by preventing lost business and data breaches.

    Having an SSL certificate on your e-Commerce website gives your clients peace of mind that their personal information is secure. The customers' personal information is safe with an SSL certificate on your website. Information such as financial data, password log-ins, identity numbers, and credit card information must be safeguarded at all times. If confidential information is compromised, then it can result in monetary losses or legal problems. In e-commerce, membership, and other situations where consumers are required to disclose personal information, this is incredibly important.
