302s - what are they?

I am confused anout 302s. I have need had a really clear explanation as to what they are and what they are for. How are they different to 301s?

a 302 is a temporary redirection - you would use this for a page that has currently move though will return to that URL at a later date i.e. I may use a 302 for one of the promotional tool pages on www.addme.com if this tool has been taken down for maintenance.

301 is a permanent redirect - the page / URL no longer exists and should no longer be requested. This could be used for a special offer page that you may have on your website. If this page has been crawled and indexed by the search engines and now you wish to remove it, instead of returning a 404 error (Page not found) simply use a permanent redirect to another page of a like topic.

If you add a 301 incorrectly, is it safe to revert to a 302, or will it screw up your serps? I mean, I have been using 301s like 302s - how can I fix this?

I can not forsee any problems in changing the 301 back to a 302.

That said - over use of a 301 or 302 can put load on your web server thus slowing down the speed at which your pages are loaded in the browser.

Another point for consideration - If your pages have page rank, instead of using a redirect, why not link to the new / changed page from the old page?

Thus you still have the same if not more pages indexed, less load on your web server and the existing page keeps it's page rank.

We use 302 redirect for temporary move one webpage to another.

A 302 redirect means that the move is only temporary. Search engines need to figure out whether to keep the old page, or replace it with the one found at the new location.
