Directory Submission is helpful to increase backlink but we have to take care about directories whether they provide one-way dofollow back link, approve our site in short time and directories are cached regularly by search engine.

It is good from backlink perspective again most of the free services took more than 6 months to list nad may get removed after one year. To do paid one it is costly especially for those organisation who do not have much budget.....

Those directories which are nofollow and have spam postings are not good for your site so be avoid to submit your post on it. Try to find high pr directory sites like dmoz and some other like it.
