According to me both are important factors while making any website popular. SMO is social media optimization and SEO is search engine optimization. The search engine uses techniques to create backlinks, and Social media optimization includes social networking sites as Facebook, twitter, google plus, linked in etc......

SEO is for long last results

Both SEO and SMO are good for generating traffic to your site.
SEO is a method of optimizing your site for search engine which results may last for long time if you continue the same

SMO is posting your site to social media sites like facebook, twitter, pinterest for instant traffic.

The concept of SMO has been kicked around for a while, but much like SEO it’s always been kind of a gray area, a moving target. How do you optimize what people are sharing on Facebook and Twitter, and Google+? How do you control what people see when they share your content on Social Networks?

Both are having their own importance, these days to get your website ranked. Along with SEO, SMM plays a great role.People are more influenced by the social media sharing.
