A firewall is a network security system that monitors and controls all your incoming and outgoing network traffic based on advanced and a defined set of security rules.Using a single software firewall alongside a router or hardware firewall can strengthen network security without posing any compatibility problems. Using multiple software firewalls, however, will cause conflicts, hampering correct operation. Businesses highly concerned with network security can put together multiple hardware firewalls, minimizing any weaknesses in each, but this requires careful expert setup to avoid incompatibilities and blocking of legitimate data.

It's very easy to get confuse with the word firewall with what it's not!

Firewall is an application or a device that follows a set of rule(s) to perform a routinely security checks to DENY, REJECT or ALLOW any matching incoming and or outgoing datagram from your end system(s).

If you have a Web Server, you would want to allow incoming and outgoing datagram or packet on port 80 which is http, as well as port 443 (secure web using SSL https) then block the rest request.

Mail Server want to open certain port for sending and receiving emails. Nothing else should be allowed.

Firewall normally means a wall or partition that can impede or prevent fire spread. In machine form, firewall is a wall and a shield that prevents unauthorized access to a network or device through the outside.

Firewall is an intruders and hackers system that protects the network. It is a network security system that keeps an eye on the traffic going in and out and prevents and slows down viruses and malware and spreads them to each other.

For checking and filtering packets, Firewall uses defined rules, and terminology. The output and incoming firewall protection system filters and only makes traffic compatible with all the rules.

A firewall is a software utility or hardware device that acts as a filter for data entering or leaving a network or computer. You could think of a firewall as a security guard that decides who enters or exits a building. A firewall works by blocking or restricting network ports. Firewalls are commonly used to help prevent unauthorized access to both company and home networks.
