Try to check the site of broken link check dot com, put the URL of your website and click find broken links. You will wait for a long minute depending on the size of your website. You can also install a link checker such as WebTester and Xenu Link Sleuth. If its still doesn't change, you need to contact your webmaster for a fix.

You can't do anything to prevent this, because broken links are usually those which had been removed after being indexed by Google and other search engines and the site's other resources. It might have been removed because the owner or administrator of the site might have thought of it to be of not much use or something like that.
