I'll just add to what others have replied with. Forums are great to build up a reputation as an expert in your field. Posting replies on forums related to your niche is great as solidifying your self as an expert - provided your replies are informative and helpful and not spammy.

Adding your link in your signature can help, but after a few links to your site the value of the link, in terms of search engine ranking, is pretty much nil. At that point it is useful to visitors, but not search engines.

If others, however, post links to your site within their posts, to a point where it doesn't look spammy, then that helps you in search engines. The posts on my blog that generate the most traffic have backlinks mostly from forums and not from web sites, so over time it does work.

It doesn't create strong links at all or create a huge amount of traffic. It did several years ago. It's just a good way of learning and networking with people with similar interests. The advantage of forum posting are the knowledge gaining and share your thoughts of topic that you like most.Also making friends.
