Most developers and webmasters know HTML tags all too well. In most cases, the HTML tags direct the browser on how the information included in this tag should be displayed in a browser. We know that "h1" tags will display the text within the tag in a heading 1 format, but what you may not realize is that these HTML tags do not give the search engines any information as to what that particular h1 text really means; is it referring to a video, or a book, or a person, place or thing? This makes it difficult for search engines to display relevant content to a user, in an intelligent manner.

Google recommends adding structured markup to your site. Structured markup is, essentially, a common vocabulary for describing the data on the web. The majority of sites are created from structured data, but this data is generally stored on a database, not in plain view of the Search Engines, and it is not easily retrieved once the data has been formatted into HTML. Direct access to structured data can be of great assistance to many applications, especially, search engines. Not only will implementing structured data directly to the markup of the page facilitate the search engines' understanding of the information provided, it will result in lusher search results, thus, making it easier for users to find relevant information from their queries.

Adding Schema markup to your HTML improves the way your page displays in SERPs by enhancing the rich snippets that are displayed beneath the page title.

Search engines love websites with schema data because this data makes it easier to index the website. This special information helps increase the website visibility in search engine results. Schema data should be used to make it easier for search engines to find and display the website contents properly. It can help the website appear in organic search results.

Schema markup gives webmasters all kinds of options to make their site’s listing on a search engine results page (SERP) look all snazzy and relevant to your business or service.
Schema is basically a type of ‘rich snippet’, a HTML markup that adds extra detail to the text underneath the URL in a search result.
As you can see from above, if you’ve searched for ‘tiramisu recipe’ you are far more likely to click on the result that includes an image, a starred rating, a calorie count and various other bits of information that a webmaster can provide to make a result look more appealing.
