Linux servers are more efficient and secure than Windows servers. However, if you want to use Windows software like NET then Windows servers are more suitable.

I think, choosing Linux or Windows hosting depends on our requirement. Additionally the most of the hacking attempt is carried over applications level.

Windows and Unix systems are very different. There is a huge amount of software that can work on one and not the other, so you have to be careful when choosing what environment is best. Some of the most important things you have to consider when choosing an operating system for your server is software you plan to use and if it’s compatible, programming language website is using, database type that will be used. Control panel preference is also a limiting factor for the operating system your server will use.

There are some common difference listed above. Bur most important difference between Linux and Windows servers is that Linux server is case sensitive.
    For ex :
Home.html & home.html are different page name as per Linux server
while in Windows server home.html, Home.html, and HOME.HTML are the same name.

Linux is one of the most prevalent operating systems for web hosting, because it is inexpensive and fairly easy to install. Windows is the other choice because they have world class support. However there are a lot of similarities and a lot of differences in how the two operate. There is also a difference in security between the two, and many times Windows becomes the target of spyware because of these vulnerabilities.

Difference between Windows server and Linux. Both UNIX and Microsoft server are operating systems. The Windows server and UNIX are for the most part used as enterprise application servers that are essential for different purposes including, but not constrained to email, web and even database hosting.

There are a large number of differences between Linux and Windows.

Linux is developed by many independently, while Windows is developed by a single corporate entity.

Linux source code is available so you can always maintain a system that is based on it. There are quite a few organizations that has their own Linux developers for this purpose.

Windows have “hidden features”. Including according to many experts intentional back doors that can be used to spy on you. This is the only reason why they will not show you the code. All other reasons that people have provided for not showing you their code has been debunked.

Linux is based on the Single Unix standard meaning that applications written for Unix can easily be ported to Linux and Linux applications can easily be ported to other Unix variants. It is however not a certified Single Unix implementation. Windows on the other hand is based on the proprietary Windows API which makes it difficult to port applications both to and from Windows. This is why many Windows applications only exist for Windows and many Unix/Linux applications do not exist in a Windows version. In many markets this works to Windows advantage but increasingly it is starting to become a problem where Microsoft now have been forced to develop a Linux subsystem in order to compete on some markets, by running Linux applications.

There are many variants of Linux such as Android and Ubuntu which differs a lot from each others. This is because anyone can take Linux and modify it the way they see fit. To do this with Windows requires you to have a lot of money otherwise Microsoft will not even speak to you.

Linux has been ported and can run on many platforms where Windows cannot run. Windows has been known to run on IA32, AMD64, Alpha, MIPS, PowerPC, ARM and Itanium. However current version of Windows can only run on AMD64. Microsoft originally intended to release Winsows for ARM but instead released a completely new operating system, also called Windows (RT).

Compatibility. While Linux is well known to break binary compatibility between Linux versions and distributions source code written for Linux rarely brakes with new versions. On windows who in turn is often able to run older binary executables, changes in the API often break them in a way that requires significant source code changes.

Difference between Linux & Windows Dedicated server: Linux Vs Windows has been in the debate on finding which one is best. Well, before stepping in-depth, you need to understand that Operating System (OS) on a host server will have a significant impact on the way your interaction happens with the hosting server.
If you are opting for the normal hosting solution for your sites, then you may not notice any difference. However, if it is in the case of VPS (Virtual Private Server) or Dedicated Hosting Server the probabilities of spotting the differences are high among these Operating Systems.

    1)Linux

It is initially developed by Linus Torvalds in the year 1991.
The main function of Linux OS is to manage software resources and its artifacts.
The first version of Windows OS is released in 1985 which is a simple GUI, an extension of existing disk operating system (MS-DOS) and major release as
my point of view was 1995 consumer release which has integrated windows and DOS with built-in internet support. Most of the PC
are currently running on the Windows operating system only. The latest Windows OS version is Windows 10 which is currently ruling the market.

Find below a few basic features of Linux:

    It provides multi-user capability support.
One of the main features of Linux is its portability
It has the capability to handle many instances and tasks at a single point in time. This multitasking feature provides another layer of importance from the end-user perspective
It provides good community support for the end-user and also towards its maintenance and new implemented versions.
It provides 3 layers (Authentication, Authorization, and Encryption) security framework approach.
Free license: distribution costs dependent on support
    Command line
Hardware drivers for Linux distributions are usually only available later
Support-Angebot variiert je nach Distribution und Version

    2)Windows Server

The releases of different versions are generally supported by Microsoft for 10 years including 5 years of main support and 5 years of extended support.
Windows Server is basically a Microsoft product and is a brand name for a group of server operating systems.
Linux is an open-source operating system based on UNIX, created in 1991. Linux operating system also comes with a graphical user
interface (GUI) with some necessary software’s which are used on a daily basis. It is also used in desktop computers, mobile devices,
gaming consoles, digital storing devices, eBook readers, cameras, video recorders have Linux running.

    License costs per user
    Graphic user interface
New hardware generally included on Windows systems
    Long-term support for all versions
