Search engine optimization (SEO) campaigns generate organic traffic. The goal of SEO is to improve website ranking for relevant keywords. You want your website to show up on the first page of organic search results.

Pay-per-click (PPC) campaigns generate paid traffic. The goal of running a PPC ad campaign is to increase the visibility of and traffic to your website by showing up in the paid search results – you can identify ‘paid’ results easily as they are brief advertisements separate from the organic results.

Organic search results are listings on search engine results pages that appear because of their relevance to the search terms, as opposed to their being advertisements. In contrast, non-organic search results may include pay per click advertising.

Organic and paid. Organic search results are the Web page listings that most closely match the user’s search query based on relevance. Also called “natural” search results, ranking high in the organic results is what SEO is all about.

Organic search results are the Web page listings that most closely match the user’s search query based on relevance. Paid results are basically advertisements — the Web site owners have paid to have their Web pages display for certain keywords, so these listings show up when someone runs a search query containing those keywords.

Organic search encompasses all non-paid search results that a search engine such as Google displays. An organic search result is displayed due to the merit of its content, how popular a certain website is, and how that content relates to the search keyword.

Paid search is also known as ads. Search engines will display ads alongside organic search results. This is the primary way search engines make money. Ads are nearly always displayed at the very top of a search result, or in a left/right sidebar. An example of a paid search result would be when a Google user searches for the term “laptop computer.” Google will display ads from several major computer stores (such as Apple or Dell) as well as a full range of organic content related to the keyword “laptop computer.”
