DDoS attacks are constantly changing and getting more sophisticated. In some cases, detecting them can be really difficult. However, you can take some precautions to prevent or minimize the impact of attacks. Here are some of them:

    Use a good firewall

Create unique and consistent rules for the firewall

Always upgrade your server’s operating system

Upgrade the firmware of routers and similar devices

Update programs used on the server

    Monitor your network traffic continuously

If only a few computers are the source of the attack and you were able to identify the IP addresses that originate the attack then you put an ACL on the server's firewall to block the access of these Ips

If you are sure that the attack comes from a specific country, consider blocking that country's IP for at least a while

    Tips to protect the website

Use of proxy services like Cloudflare to handle small and medium sized DDOS attacks. Cloudflare can detect and block UDP and ICMP protocols, also it can detect DNS, Layer 7 and SYN/ACK attacks.

If you are facing major revenue issues when your business website gets affected, then you can opt more expensive security solutions like Staminus, Arbor and NSFocus.

In collaboration with your web host can opt null root option. This option may get your website down temporarily, but it is a very efficient and effective way to mitigate DDOS attack.

Instead of simply trying to survive a DDoS attack, take steps to prevent one. Research indicates that about 66% of DDoS-targeted sites are attacked more than once. Web application firewalls are a good place to start because they’ll be able to differentiate between DDoS attacks and legitimate traffic. By relying on a WAF, you can protect your website from DDoS attacks and ensure your customers enjoy uninterrupted access to your site.

For this, it is essential to have multi-level protection strategies that use intrusion prevention and threat management systems. These systems can use anti-spam, content filtering, VPN, firewalls, load balancing, and security layers to spot and block attacks before they overwhelm your network.
