1-they find your site to be of interest to their audience (whether positive or negative)
2-your site has great, witty or unique information that they want to share to their readers
3-you requested them to link to your site or include your site in their list of recommended resources or related links, if they have any
4-you went to their forum and put a post there with a link to your site
You can get backlinks to your site from many places.Best way is to promote your site to social networks (Twitter, Facebook..), bookmarking sites (Digg, Stumbleupon...), Article directories (Ezine articles, GoArticles...) and web 2.0 (Squidoo, Hubpages...).
