There are two types of sitemap.
An HTML sitemap is used to help visitors to your site navigate easily.
An xml sitemap is used to facilitate the crawling of your site by search engine bots.
You don't necessarily need either, especially if your site is small with straightforward navigation.

XML Sitemaps are important for SEO because they make it easier for Google to find your site's pages—this is important because Google ranks web PAGES not just websites.

It helps the search engine index the site and provide more pages of your website online better. Using Google Search Console is a great way to track down potential problems as well.

For improving ranking, site map is important. Google ranks pages instead of website.
