Here are some steps to content optimization:
    1. Define Drivers (figure out your content goals)
    2. Build Metrics (decide what to measure, and with what tool)
    3. Plan Actions (decide what to do after reviewing metrics)
    4. Create Changes (execute the actions that were planned)
    5. Measure Success (measure again; see if goals were achieved)

If you are using a WordPress website I would recommend the Yoast plugin that not only scores your page for on-page optimization but for readability as well. Buzzsumo and Google Trends are great sources for finding content to write about.

Here are some of my notes from a webinar I took that has solid information:
2015 Criteria for Modern Content Investments
    1. One-of-a-Kind (Appears no where else on the web)
    2. Relevant (Contains content engines can interpret as on-topic)
    3. Helpful (Resolves the searchers query in a useful, efficient manner)
    4. Uniquely Valuable (Provides information that is unavailable elsewhere)
    5. Great User Experience (Is easy and pleasurable to consume on any device)
    6. Likely to spread (Convincingly answers the question: "Who will amplify this content and why?")

    Moz webinar notes:
Easier to get shares than links.
Research sites get more shares than other sites
Websites with quality get more shares than websites with many many articles.
The content type 'list posts' gets the most referring domain links and shares. (6.19)
The content type 'why posts' gets the 2nd most referring domain links. (5.66)
In-Depth content gets more links than shallow short content.
Quizzes and Videos (entertainment based) gets shares but no links.
Use Buzzsumo to see who gets the most shares on a relevant similar popular website.
Use images to add impact to content.

As we will discuss, many SEO best practices are still very much necessary in ensuring your quality content gets discovered, but these optimization considerations are much better reserved for after you focus on creating high-quality, targeted content created to serve your audience.

Every SEO expert has his own way to optimize content but in my opinion, there are few best content optimization methods:

    1. Keyword density in content,
    2. Keyword Proximity
    3. Keyword Prominence etc.

For content optimization, content should be quality, updated and optimized, keywords should be placed carefully in the content, title, anchor text, check keyword density, url in the content should be user-friendly. All these techniques are important for SEO.
