    A 404 (Not Found) error does not directly cause a website's ranking to drop. Properly handled 404s are normal, but they can indirectly hurt rankings by ruining user experience, wasting crawl budget, and losing link equity if many broken links exist. It is best to fix internal 404s and use 301 redirects for permanently moved content.
