Hi, I’m about to launch a new discussion forum and need hosting advice.
Should I start with shared hosting or go straight to a VPS? How much RAM and bandwidth would a small but growing forum require?

I started my first forum on shared hosting and upgraded later when traffic grew. In the beginning it’s usually enough unless you expect hundreds of users online at the same time. I personally used hostpro.com for a few small projects and had a good experience with their support – they respond pretty fast when something breaks. Their VPS plans are also reasonably priced if you need to scale later. So starting shared and upgrading later can work well.

Shared hosting is ok to start but once you grow it will need a VPS for the traffic.

Forums are very traffic intensive.

I'd start with Shared Hosting. It's budget-friendly, includes a control panel, and is more than enough for a new forum. You can always upgrade to a VPS later as your community grows. VPS hosting costs more and usually doesn't include a control panel by default.
