    Hello Cyril,

On July 26, 2021, Google announced the launch of their new algorithm update referred to as the “link spam update.” The update rolled out over the course of next two weeks and largely focused on identifying and nullifying link spam. Since the algorithm update can identify links across multiple languages, there is a wide range of links that may be affected.

According to Google’s blog post, “A reminder on qualifying links and our link spam update,” the best way to avoid being hurt by the update is to follow white hat practices and avoid methods that violate their guidelines for link schemes. Tagging your links appropriately was also on their list of things to do.

To ensure that your links will not be penalized by Google, use the following tagging conventions when applicable:

    Affiliate links: “rel=sponsored”
    Sponsored links: “rel=sponsored”
    Guest posting: “rel=nofollow”

Google first announced the completion of the Link Spam Update on their Twitter profile on the 26th of July, 2021, where it reminded website owners of the importance of qualifying affiliate links, guest posts and other monetization posts.

In essence, the update addresses those websites and blog owners who regularly link to affiliate sites and use other monetization techniques that require linking. They are to use the proper qualification for these commercial links so that they aren’t affected.

Google announced a new update about spam links in July 2021, which will identify spam links and ignore low-quality backlinks.

That means, if you were using spammy links on your website, you might experience a drop in rankings in the next couple of weeks when this new algorithm update is fully rolled out. This new update is a continuation of the Penguin 4.0 released in 2016.

Here’s what Google wrote in the announcement:

“In our continued efforts to improve the quality of the search results, we’re launching a new link spam fighting change today — which we call the “link spam update.” This algorithm update, which will roll out across the next two weeks, effectively identifies and nullifies link spam more broadly across multiple languages. Sites taking part in link spam will see changes in Search as those links are re-assessed by our algorithms.”

Google begins rolling out the “link spam update,” which makes its algorithms more effective at identifying and nullifying link spam.

The update begins rolling out today and will take at least two weeks to roll out broadly to search results in multiple languages.

Google cautions that changes in rankings are imminent for some site owners:

“In our continued efforts to improve the quality of the search results, we’re launching a new link spam fighting change today — which we call the “link spam update…

Sites taking part in link spam will see changes in Search as those links are re-assessed by our algorithms.”

Information strewn throughout Google’s announcement suggests a particular emphasis on targeting links from sponsored, guest, and affiliate content.

In fact, the announcement begins as a casual reminder to mark up affiliate content with the appropriate rel values. Google buries the lede, as the news about this algorithm update isn’t mentioned until the end of the blog post.

This is an indication that Google wants site owners to pay attention to its advice on how to handle links within content where there’s an exchange of value involved.

Let’s going over Google’s guidance, which appears to be especially relevant to this algorithm update.

Put simply, if you've got affiliate, sponsored or paid links on your site you need to mark them appropriately, using the no follow and sponsored tags.

And you need to do that for every link, in every post, for every site you have, including old content...

Now have a quick think about how many hours, or in deed days it could take you to go through all the existing affiliate links on your site...

Exactly, at the very least it's a major headache, if not close to impossible...

Google has repeatedly clarified what they consider natural and unnatural links, for example, in their link scheme guidelines. This link spam update focuses on paid links, affiliate links and sponsored guest posts.

Google has explained what they consider to be regular and unnatural connections commonly, for instance, in their rules on interface plans. This connection spam update centres around paid connections, offshoot interfaces and supported visitor posting.
Connect spam is characterized as connections between pages that are available for reasons other than merit. Connect spam exploits interface based positioning calculations, which gives sites higher rankings the more other exceptionally positioned sites connect to it.

Google Search Link Spam update is aimed at targeting the spam links. They have stated that it is their new efforts to improve the quality of search results and to fight the link spamming practices.

This new update will identify and nullify the spam links across websites. Websites that adopt Black-Hat techniques by using spam links are expected to see a dip in rankings after the rollout of this update. Besides English language sites, this update will affect websites of multiple languages.

This update however is not expected to penalize the websites or de-index them for having spammy links. What it does is ignores such links. Now nullifying link spam will affect your rankings, if those links helped in increasing the rankings of your web pages.

That implies, assuming you were utilizing nasty connections on your site, you may encounter a drop in rankings in the following two or three weeks when this new calculation update is completely carried out. This new update is a continuation of the Penguin 4.0 delivered in 2016.

This is what Google wrote in the declaration:

"In our proceeded with endeavours to work on the nature of the indexed lists, we're sending off another connection spam battling change today — which we call the "interface spam update." This calculation update, which will carry out across the following fourteen days, viably recognizes and invalidates connect spam all the more extensively across various dialects. Destinations participating in interface spam will consider changes in Search to be those connections are re-evaluated by our calculations."
