What is a domain extension?
Hello Friends,
A domain extension is the combination of characters following the period in a web address. Domain extensions are the letters that follow the final period in a URL. For example, in GoDaddy.com, the .com is the domain extension of the GoDaddy domain name. Common extensions include .com, .org, and .net.
Domain name extensions are the last part of a domain name. For example, in ‘xxxxxxx.com,’ the domain name extension is .com.
You’ll also see domain name extensions referred to as top-level domains (TLDs). These terms will be used interchangeably throughout the post.
Your domain name and domain name extension give you a working domain name that your target audience can type into their browsers to access your website.

What do they all mean and what’s their relative importance to Canadian small businesses? It’s important that a small business understand what its options are for developing and marketing their brand in the online arena.

The best extension is .com. I work for a domain broker who specializes in acquisitions and it feels like every day I speak to someone who needs there company’s .com. They have tried other extensions (usually because it’s cheaper or they just didn’t know they could try to acquire their exact name .com match, even if it it was already taken) and now have realized they are losing out on traffic, having a more difficult time marketing, or they are a startup who has been instructed to obtain their .com with their latest round of funding.) Unfortunately trying to get their .com after they are an established company become more expensive. The advice I always give is to just get your .com in the beginning to save a lot of trouble.
A space expansion is the mix of characters following the period in a web address. Space expansions are the letters that follow the last time frame in a URL. For instance, in GoDaddy.com, the .com is the area expansion of the GoDaddy space name. Normal expansions incorporate .com, .organization, and .net.
